One of the most beautiful and engaging sports cars ever, Ferrari’s Dino 206 GT was the road-going product of Maranello’s victorious V-6 racing engine program named after Enzo Ferrari’s son and initiated in 1956. Development was intensive and victories were many, including Grand Prix World Manufacturer’s and Driver’s championships respectively for Ferrari and driver Phil Hill in 1961, plus many sports car wins including back-to-back Targa Florio victories in 1961 and 1962. Debuted in May 1965 at the Nürburgring 1000 Kms race, the 166 P sports racer was the first Ferrari to carry the “Dino” badge, followed by small batches of Dino 206 SP and 206 S sports racers.
Changes governing F2 racing for 1967 mandated production-based engines, with a minimum of 500 built yearly. Since Ferrari could not meet demand, a deal allowed Fiat to manufacture the engines and fit them into new upmarket Fiat Dino models. Fiat would also supply engines for Ferrari’s use. The Dino 206 GT Speciale shown on the Pininfarina stand at the 1965 Paris Motor Show and an even wilder show car displayed at the 1966 Torino Motor Show foreshadowed Ferrari’s new Dino 206 GT, debuted in 1967 as the first mid-engine production car from Ferrari, its first V-6 road car, and the launch product of Ferrari’s new Dino marque.
A purpose-built road model, the Dino’s bodywork was penned by Pininfarina stylist Aldo Brovarone and produced at Ferrari’s longtime coachbuilding partner Scaglietti in lightweight aluminum over a tubular steel chassis with double-wishbone underpinnings. The Dino 206 GT entered production in February 1968 with all-alloy engines powering them, rated 180 hp at 8,000 rpm. According to Ferrari experts, just 153 were built before the advent of the 246 GT in 1969.
Numbered 00210, this 1968 Dino 206 GT was factory-finished in Verde Scuro Ferrari (Ferrari Dark Green) over Nero (Black) cloth upholstery and delivered new on November 16, 1968 to Ferrari dealer Dino Ravasio & Figli in Verona, Italy. According to records compiled by Matthias Bartz, author of The Dino Compendium, the first owner of 00210 was Cartiere del Timavo S.p.A., a company owned by Pietro Ferraro of Trieste, Italy, a stalwart privateer Ferrari racer who finished 4th in the 1962 Targa Florio at the wheel of a Ferrari 250 GTO. The Dino was sold in 1970 to its second owner, a local resident, and the Dino remained in Italy with four more owners until it was sold to the consignor in Holland, who had the Dino comprehensively serviced, selectively restored, and repainted at a cost of €40,000 with the goal of maintaining as much originality as possible. Next, it was displayed at the world-famous Techno-Classica show in Essen, Germany, during April 2018.
As offered, this exceedingly rare Dino 206 GT is simply captivating in its factory-specified color combination – both refreshing and attractive on the Dino’s alloy coachwork. Most recently, on October 15, 2020, the Dino received Ferrari Classiche certification and the Red Book is included with the sale of the vehicle. Also accompanying are ACI (Automobile Club d’Italia) paperwork, service and restoration receipts, and an original Dino 206 GT use and maintenance manual. Rare, featuring distinctive original livery and believed to have never been fully restored, this Ferrari Classiche-certified 1968 Ferrari Dino 206 GT marks a wonderful collector find in all respects.
